Understand workplace culture

Every workplace has its own unique culture. This culture affects how people interact, how work gets done, and what’s considered acceptable behaviour. Understanding this culture helps you fit in and succeed. Here’s how you can learn about and adapt to a workplace culture:

How to Learn About Workplace Culture Before You Start

  1. Check the Company’s Website and Social Media

  • Look at the company’s website to see their mission, vision, and values.
  • Browse their social media profiles (like Facebook, LinkedIn, and X) to see recent activities and company events.
  • Read reviews on websites like Glassdoor to learn about employee experiences.
  1. Talk to Current Employees

  • If possible, talk to people who already work at the company. You can use LinkedIn to find and connect with current employees.
  1. Ask Questions in Your Job Interview

  • When interviewing, ask questions to understand the company’s culture better. For example: “How would you describe the company culture?” or “What opportunities for learning and growth are available?”

Adapting to Workplace Culture as a New Employee

  1. Observe and Listen

  • Watch how people communicate with each other. Do they use email, phone, or face-to-face meetings?
  • Notice how they use shared spaces like the kitchen and office equipment.
  1. Get to Know Your Environment

  • Familiarize yourself with office tools and communal areas. Follow the same practices as your colleagues for shared spaces, like cleaning up after using the kitchen.

  1. Talk to Your Co-workers

  • Ask colleagues about their experiences. Questions like, “What do you enjoy about working here?” or “What should I be aware of to fit in better?” can help you understand the workplace better.
