How to Connect?

Number of Appointments

Number of Appointments To ensure that Career Centre services are available to all students who need them, students may book appointments as follows:

  • up to six Job Search and Employment advising appointments with a Career Educator per semester (Resumé/Cover Letter Feedback Session, Interview Practice Session, Job Search and Employment Advising Appointments, LinkedIn Advising with maximum of two appointments per week).
  • up to six Career Counselling appointments with a Career Counsellor per semester

 

Career Counselling

Are you having difficulty deciding on a career path? Unsure of how your degree may relate to your future career? Book an appointment and meet confidentially with a professionally trained career counsellor to discuss.

Your first counselling appointment will be a 20-minute session to help you on various academic and career topics, such as:

  • exploring what you can do with your degree;
  • learning how York’s Career Decision Making Model can help you understand the career decision-making process.
  • thinking about changing or declaring your major.

Have you previously met with a Career Counsellor and would like to further discuss your career questions and career goals? You can book a 50-minute session(s) on Experience York to continue your conversation on topics, such as:

  • exploring your career interests and developing an action plan;
  • receiving referrals and building supports across the York campus;
  • discussing further education opportunities and next steps.

Meet confidentially with a career counsellor to receive support while exploring careers both inside and outside of academia.

Career counselling can help you with your career transition planning as a graduate student on topics such as:

  • Developing a holistic approach to your career wellness planning with York’s Career Decision Making Model
  • Exploring career transitions outside of academia
  • Accessing resources and referrals

Please note: Resumés and cover letters cannot be reviewed during career counselling appointments. If you would like assistance with this, please book Resumé Feedback or Cover Letter Feedback appointments. After you attend the Resumé Writing webinar, you become eligible to book one-on-one Resumé Feedback Appointments with Career Educators. No prerequisite is required to book Cover Letter Feedback appointments.

Job Search & Employment Support

Do you need support with your job search, either your career after graduation, a part-time or summer job while you’re at York? Are you unsure how to develop your strategy? Do you need feedback on your resumé or interview practice?

The Career Centre offers specialized appointments to support you in your job search!

Career Educators are available for 30-minute appointments to help you:

  • answer specific questions regarding your Resumé or Cover Letter (due to time limitations, it is not possible to provide a complete Resumé or Cover Letter feedback session. If you would like more assistance with your Resumé or Cover Letter, please attend the Resumé & Cover Letter Writing workshop.)
  • prepare for an upcoming interview and develop strategies to improve your interview performance;
  • discover job search resources;
  • learn effective job search strategies;
  • gain ideas on how to expand your LinkedIn network; and
  • get support with determining your next steps.

Once you have completed the Resumé & Cover Letter Writing workshop, you are eligible to book a 30-minute, one-on-one Resumé Feedback Appointment with a Career Educator.

In this session, together we will review your resumé content and provide feedback to further enhance, strategize and target your application for increased visibility and help gaining a competitive edge.

In this session, we will assist you with writing a unique, professional and accomplishment-based document to persuade your audience and hold employer's attention. No prerequisite is required.

!! Please noteOur attendance policy ensures all York students have access to job search advising supports as needed.

 1:1 appointments can be booked up to three weeks in advance, they are released on Experience York (the Career Centre online job posting and registration system). Appointments may also become available throughout the week due to cancellations.

The Career Centre offers a hybrid service model for career advising and counselling services.  You are welcome to schedule virtual or in-person appointments. 

Career Lounge Hours:

Monday - Friday: 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (In-person and Virtual)

Monday Evening Hours: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (Virtual Only)

Summer Fridays: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (operating virtually from May to August)
