Understand your employment contract

An employment contract is a legal agreement between you and your employer. It outlines key details such as salary, responsibilities, rights, vacation time, sick leave, termination policies, and contract duration. In Ontario, employment relationships are governed by laws like the Employment Standards Act (ESA), Labour Relations Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

When accepting a job, ensure you read the contract carefully and agree with all terms before signing. Keep a copy for future reference.

The Employment Standards Act (ESA) Protects workers' rights on issues like minimum wage, hours, leave, and termination.

Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) - Safeguards your health and safety at work, ensuring workplaces follow strict safety regulations.

3 Fundamental Rights of Employees in Canada

  • The right to know about workplace hazards.
  • The right to participate in health and safety activities.
  • The right to refuse unsafe work without punishment.

You cannot be disciplined for exercising these rights

Additionally, Ontario's Human Rights Code ensures equal rights without discrimination in jobs, housing, services, and contracts.
