Counselling and advising appointments are available to help you with deciding on a career path or support for your job search.

Career Counselling

Master's and PhD Career Counselling

Are you having difficulty deciding on a career path? Unsure of how your degree may relate to your future career?

Book an appointment and meet confidentially with a trained career counsellor to discuss.

First session:

Your first counselling appointment will be a 20-minute session to help you:

  • explore what you can do with your degree;
  • learn how York’s Career Decision Making Model can help you understand the career decision-making process; and
  • think about changing or declaring your major.

Additional sessions:

If you have previously met with a career counsellor, you can book another 50-minute session. Continue your conversation on topics such as:

  • your career interests and developing an action plan;
  • receiving referrals and building supports across the York campus; and
  • discussing further education opportunities and next steps.

Job Search Advising

Career Educators are available for 30-minute appointments to help you:

  • write a resume and cover letter;
  • prepare for an upcoming interview and develop strategies to improve your interview performance;
  • discover job search resources;
  • learn effective job search strategies;
  • gain ideas on how to expand your LinkedIn network; and
  • get support with determining your next steps.

One-on-one resumé or cover letter feedback session

Bring a copy of either your resumé or cover letter to be reviewed by a career educator.

One-on-one appointments can be booked up to three weeks in advance. Appointments are released on Experience York. Please check back throughout the week, as appointments may become available.

Note: To book a one-on-one resume or cover letter feedback session, you must have completed the Resumé & Cover Letter Writing workshop.

Attendance Policy

If you miss three individual appointments without cancelling before 9 a.m. on the day of the appointment, you will be unable to book appointments with the Career Centre for the remainder of the term.

FAQs

Students sometimes miss Career Centre appointments, preventing others from registering. Limited appointments often mean long wait times. To ensure fairness and efficient use of resources, an attendance policy is in place.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Career Centre's attendance policy, please contact the Career Centre at career@yorku.ca.

  • Individual appointments begin promptly at their scheduled time.
  • If you arrive late for your designated appointment time, you will be given the remainder of your appointment time only.
  • Prior to your appointment, take the time to become familiar with our Keele Campus location at 202 McLaughlin College.

To ensure that Career Centre services are available to all students who need them, the following appointments may be booked:

  • up to six resumé/cover letter feedback sessions per academic year, with a maximum of two appointments per week up to six Career Counselling appointments per academic year
  • up to two interview practice sessions per academic year, with a maximum of one appointment per week
  • up to two job search advising appointments per academic year, with a maximum of one appointment per week

There is no limit to the number of workshops you may attend.

If you miss three individual appointments (without cancelling before 9 a.m. on the day of the appointment), you will be unable to book appointments with the Career Centre for the remainder of the term.

For one-one-one appointments:

Please provide 24 hours’ notice to cancel a one-on-one appointment. You will receive a "no-show" on your account if you cancel after 9 a.m. on the day of your appointment. After receiving three “no-shows,” you will be unable to book Career Centre appointments for the remainder of the term.

  • There are two ways to cancel an appointment: Log in to Experience York with your Passport York username and password.
  • From your dashboard, scroll down to the section called “Your Upcoming Schedule.”
  • Select “Cancel Registration.”

OR

  • Contact the Career Centre at 416-736-5351 prior to 9 a.m. on the day of your appointment.
  • Leave a voicemail message with the following details:
    • your name
    • your student number
    • the name and date of the activity you are cancelling
For events and workshops:

There are two ways you can cancel an event or workshop:

  • Log in to Experience York with your Passport York username and password.
  • From your dashboard, scroll down to the section called “Your Upcoming Schedule.”
  • Click "View" beside the activity you wish to cancel.
  • Select "Cancel Registration."

OR

  • Contact the Career Centre by calling 416-736-5351 prior to 9 a.m. on the day of your appointment.

    • the name and date of the activity you are cancelling

Please note that we cannot accept cancellations via email.

The following workshops will close their entry 10 minutes after the scheduled start time. This is to minimize disruption and maximize your learning experience:

  • Who am I? Self-Assessment Game
  • Dining Etiquette

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early. Latecomers will be redirected to the next available workshop.

The Career Centre offers a hybrid service model for career advising and counselling services.  You are welcome to schedule virtual or in-person appointments. 

Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (virtually and in-person)

New Monday Virtual Evening Hours for Career Advising 5-7PM starting October 16, 2023!

Summer Fridays: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (operating virtually from May to August)
